You Are the Boss of You

Let’s talk about obligations. There are a few types, right? You have obligations to your friends and family to ensure you maintain healthy relationships…obligations to your employer to put forth your best work…obligations to society in the form of following laws and contributing to your community…but, what about obligations to yourself? Those are the ones that so often get left in the dust when life gets hectic, and we get it. When something’s gotta give, it can be easier to modify your own wants and needs than it is to ask others to adjust. Being flexible and adaptable are certainly great traits, but being overly accommodating can definitely lead to more long-term issues.

Do you ever feel like you’re living your life for the sake of others at the expense of your own happiness? Do you allow others to make decisions for you because commitment and finality freak you out? Do you agree to attend parties and family functions just because someone said that you should? Friend, we’re here to liberate you from all that mess. The next time you’re feeling obligated to do something you’d rather not do, repeat these three simple reminders to yourself:

  1. If it doesn’t bring you joy, don’t do it. If your stomach gets wrapped in knots thinking about spending time with your ignorant extended family or stressing about keeping up with the other parents at your kid’s school, it’s time to reevaluate some things. Life is too short to get caught up in comparisons or spending time with people you don’t even like (regardless of whether or not you are related)! Let it go and instead, pour that energy into something, or someone, who brings you happiness.
  2. You are a grown-up who gets to make grown-up decisions. Notice that we said “gets to” and not, “has to” here. Sure, being responsible for yourself and others can be challenging (oh hey spouse, kids, and aging parents), but it is an honor and a privilege to be trusted with that kind of authority. Even on hard days, try to remind yourself that you can choose your next step, and it could very well be the one that sets you on a path to amazing things!
  3. If it has to do with your body, mind, or overall health, you get to make the call. Okay, okay. Sure there are times when we need the guidance of a trusted loved one or medical professional, but generally speaking, YOUR body is YOUR temple. The way you choose to treat it is ultimately up to you, and the choices you make are ones that you have to live with. Nobody else.
