Embrace the Wrong Turns in Life

It’s super smart to have goals, and it’s super-DUPER smart to have actionable plans in place to help you achieve them. But what happens when life throws you a curveball? Are you nimble enough to work with something unexpected, or does it throw you so far off-course that you forget where you were headed in the first place? It’s not uncommon to have to adjust expectations in life, but how do you do that without feeling overwhelmed or defeated? Try these three strategies for making the most out of life’s “wrong turns.”

  • Find the joy. Every new day is a beautiful opportunity to enjoy the world around you. Whether that’s on a trip abroad, or within the walls of your very own home, there’s always something to explore. Try doing one thing each day that brings you true joy. (Hint: It can be something really small!) By treating yourself to coffee with an old friend or reading a few positive quotes online, you’re allowing your mind to explore a happy place. The more chances you give yourself to enjoy these moments, the more your brain will be hard-wired to default to a joyful state of mind!
  • Have a sense of humor. We all mess up, and depending on the circumstances, it can be pretty embarrassing, but do you really think you’re the only one who’s ever missed the last step in the stairwell or had food stuck in their teeth? NOPE! We have all been there. Laughing at yourself is one of the most liberating things you can do. Recognize that you are perfectly imperfect (just like the rest of us) and own those goofy mishaps! Embracing these moments will help you build confidence and resilience in tricky situations.
  • Look for the lesson. Rather than sitting in the yucky feelings that can come along with embarrassing moments, try to step out of your skin and see it from someone else’s perspective. If you misspeak during your presentation, you probably just put the next person a little more at ease by showing that perfection is not the expectation. We’re not on this planet to impress others. We’re here to improve ourselves.
