Are You the Negative Nelly?

It’s no secret that the last couple of years have been hard. Maybe you lost your job, lost a loved one, or simply lost your sense of normalcy and it left you feeling angry and resentful. It is totally understandable to feel these emotions, however, there comes a time when we need to accept them and move forward, not let them define us.

When you think of a ‘negative Nelly’, who in your life comes to mind? Probably not yourself, we’re guessing? Well, many people exhibit surprising signs that cause others to associate them as being negative without even realizing it. We’re here to shine a light on some of those signs and encourage you to get back to being the positive Polly we know you are!

  • Everything is always “too good to be true”. Maybe you just started seeing someone new or you got to the final round of interviews for a job you really want, yet you find yourself saying things like “I’m sure it won’t last” or “They’ll probably offer it to someone else”.
  • You dwell on the past. Although it is important to learn from and reflect on your past, it does not define who you are moving forward. If something didn’t go as you had hoped, accept it and find something new to channel your energy toward.
  • You judge others. You may think your comments about other people are harmless but in reality it is a reflection of your own insecurities. Insecure people are often the ones judging and gossiping and tearing people down. Your friends may begin to wonder what kinds of things you say about them when they’re not around.
  • You can’t accept compliments. Modesty is one thing but if you struggle to accept compliments because you think they simply aren’t true, you may need to do some self-reflection. Why do you think the nice words are untrue? Why do you have a hard time saying ‘thank-you’?
  • You have a hard time maintaining relationships. Often people, consciously or subconsciously, distance themselves from negative people. Either they’ve recognized your toxic traits or they’ve subconsciously realized they always come away from interactions with you feeling drained.
